What is the Federation of Master Builders (FMB)?

The Federation of Master Builders or FMB is an independent and non-profit making trade association established over 60 years ago to protect the interests of small and medium-sized building firms. The FMB promotes professionalism and high quality workmanship among small and medium-sized building firms throughout the UK. There are more than 180,000 construction companies operating in the UK but they can only gain membership of the Federation of Master Builders if they have been trading for a minimum of 12 months, have six references including one from a 'professional' or Local Authority Building Control and have Public and employer liability insurance (if applicable), and are registered for VAT. Directors of companies are checked and the business address and details of the firm are verified. It is also worth noting that FMB carries out credit and county court judgment checks on all potential members.

As a member of FMB, the builder will need to adhere to a strict code of practice covering such things as:

• ensuring they provide a full and comprehensive quote
• they have the necessary public liability and employer liability insurance
• the need to provide a detailed contract that includes payment terms, start date, duration of the job

Using an FMB builder means that, as well as being assured of quality work, you have somewhere to turn if there is any cause for complaint during a project. The FMB takes all complaints very seriously and the majority of complaints are resolved through the FMB's intervention.
