Society of Garden Designers
What is the Society of Garden Designers?
The Society of Garden Designers (SGD) was founded in 1981 and is a professional association for garden designers in the UK. It is made up of both garden designers and landscape architects. The society is dedicated to supporting, promoting and maintaining the highest quality of standards within the membership.
The society has accreditation procedures, conferences, journals, regional training events and local networking groups. The Society of Garden Designers addresses current issues, engages with the industry and broadens the understanding and knowledge of all aspects of garden design.
What are the advantages of using a member of the Society of Garden Designers?
All members of the Society of Garden designers are required to abide by the Code of Professional Conduct and Good Practice.
There are currently 1700 members of which 200 are Registered Members and Fellows. Registered Members are professionally qualified garden designers assessed and approved by the Society. Fellows are Registered Members who have made a significant contribution to the Society.
To obtain Registered membership a designer must have at least two years full time work experience and have successfully completed a rigorous adjudication process. This process includes the submission of three complete projects, from start to finish, including all survey details, plans and planting information. The designer has to prove they can carry out every aspect of garden design to an extremely high standard before the adjudication panel will approve their application for Registered Member status.
